An Oil for You and Your PetBy: Evita Basilio
The Omega-3s found in flaxseed oil are not just beneficial for people, but also for your dog or cat! Our dogs at the office love the Alligga Flaxseed Oil and will even search for any spilled oil and lick it all up! We add it to their regular dog food and have noticed that their dandruff has disappeared.
The benefits of flaxseed oil for humans apply to your pet too, such as the ability to help regulate important body functions, including blood pressure, kidney and artery function, as well as calcium and energy metabolism. Flaxseed oil contains lignans, a compound that is believed to have powerful cancer fighting, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. The oil has also shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and appears to improve mobility in arthritic dogs by helping inflamed joints.
In particular, the essential fatty acids help give your dog a shiny, healthier coat, which is essential if they suffer from dry, itchy skin problems. Dogs seem to suffer from a deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids since the foods they consume lack this important nutrient. The dosage that most pet owners have found to be effective is approximately ½ to 1 teaspoon added to the dog food (the exact amount varies depending on the weight of your dog as well – a bigger dog will require a larger dose of flaxseed oil).
